NAWZAD, AFGHANISTAN — After being captured by Taliban insurgents, more than a dozen Afghan hostages were liberated during a joint mission between U.S. and local forces.

CNN reports that an Afghan military operation was carried out on Thursday at Helmand province's Nawzad District, some 500 kilometers southwest of Kabul.

With the U.S. providing intelligence and planning support helicopters and ground troops from the Afghan Special Security Forces conducted an assault on a Taliban prison.

According to Fox News, the operation, which was originally aimed at arresting a Taliban commander, successfully freed some 40 to 60 prisoners, which included Afghan police, soldiers, and border control officers.

The liberated prisoners were taken to Afghanistan's Ministry of Defense for medical care. Details of their initial capture are unknown, reports NBC.
