Woman fatally stabs pregnant friend, cuts unborn child out of womb

NEW YORK — Twenty-two-year-old Ashleigh Wade has been charged with manslaughter, murder, and criminal possession of a weapon after she stabbed a pregnant woman and cut the victim's unborn baby out of her womb. She is currently also undergoing psychological evaluation.
The victim, Angelikque Sutton, 22, was eight and a half months pregnant when she was assaulted by Wade, a woman she knew from school.
The New York Times reports that Wade had been telling people she was that one who was pregnant, and was trying to pass Sutton's baby off as her own.
Wade strangled the victim and stabbed her multiple times in the neck and torso at Wade's apartment in the Bronx area of New York before performing a crude caesarian section to remove the baby from Sutton's womb. Wade later claimed she was trying to save the child.
When Wade's boyfriend arrived at the scene, he wrapped the baby in a jacket and called 911, according to the New York Post.
Wade was taken into into custody by police officers who responded to the scene.
Emergency officials tended to the newborn outside the house before rushing both the infant and her gravely wounded mother to the hospital. Sutton later died from her injuries.
