RIKERS ISLAND, NEW YORK — A woman is suing the city of New York over allegations that she was sexually harassed by prison guards during a recent visit to Rikers Island. According to Jeanette Reynoso, 26, the guard who normally screened her at the George Motchan Detention Center was not there when she visited on Oct. 2. Instead, two female guards pulled her from the visitation line and asked her to follow them into a separate room. After passing through two metal detectors and entering the room, Reynoso says the guards ordered her to strip naked before they gave her a full body cavity search. "I don't know why this was happening. Then I realized they wanted to see my body," Reynoso told The New York Post. "I got operated on in May; I got a liposuction and breast implants," she added. "I had my hands on the wall and they were touching my breasts, shaking them. They were curious about my body." "I knew they wanted to see what was under my clothes because, at the end of the process, they had the nerve to ask me who operated on me, how much my operation cost and whether it hurt," she said. Reynoso says when she protested, the two guards threatened to take away her visitation privileges for 45 days. Reynoso says she has been going to Rikers three times a week to visit her husband, Lewis Espinal, since he was imprisoned on multiple charges. Espinal was charged with striking a pedestrian with his Mercedes while fleeing from police on the Upper West Side in July. During her previous visits, Reynoso says that she has never experienced more than a pat-down and being asked to walk through a metal detector. Reynoso's claim against the city was filed Thursday by her attorney, Alan Figman, who said his client has also suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.
