ULAANBAATAR, MONGOLIA — A Mongolian trade union leader has set himself on fire earlier this week to protest against a proposed deal with China and its negative effects on the mining industry.

The unnamed union leader called for a press conference to talk about the problems miners face in the country.

The government no longer supports our company, families of the workers are forced to starve, this is why I will burn myself for the people of Mongolia and our children,” he said.

And this is exactly what he did a second later.

The man is now at the National Trauma and Orthopedic Research Center of Mongolia with severe burns that cover 40% of his body.

The man’s goal was to draw attention on how dramatic the situation is for some mine workers in Mongolia.

According to reports, he works for Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi, a mining company owned by the state that holds the license to a giant coal mine deposit near the border with CHina.

Mongolian government is now considering to sell part of the Tavan Tolgoi mine to China to boost foreign investments and revive growth, with negative effects on the miners working conditions.

According to The LipTV, the coal, copper, gold and silver mine accounts for 40 percent of Mongolia’s GDP.
