Republican Muslim woman wears U.S. flag hijab on Fox News TV interview

NEW YORK — President and founder of the Republican Muslim Coalition, Saba Ahmed, stole the show during a Tuesday Fox News interview with Megyn Kelly by wearing a hijab designed with a U.S. flag pattern.

Appearing alongside Donald Trump campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson, Ahmed was a guest on the television program, commenting on recent remarks made by the GOP hopeful in which he supported the idea first expressed by the French interior minister that mosques that preach hate may be closed.

Wearing a hijab with a U.S. flag design, Ahmed responded to an assertion that mosques are breeding places for extremism by simply saying, "Megyn, we go to the mosque to pray," before explaining that while extremist Muslims do indeed pray at mosques, that is not a justification for shutting them down. Ahmed also asked if a church would be closed due to a Christian extremist having prayed there.

Online however, Saba Ahmed's point was largely overshadowed by her "Stars & Stripes" hijab, which is not technically lawful. Under the U.S. flag code, the banner of the United States cannot be used as "apparel," "drapery" or "bedding," despite the ubiquity of such products found across the United States.

Speaking about the hijab controversy to New York Daily News, Ahmed said, "I saw people wearing American flag scarves around their shoulders, and I thought it would be cool." She says she meant no disrespect to the U.S. flag, noting she might just wear a "small U.S. flag pin or something in the future."
