CLEVELAND, OHIO — A five-year-old boy reported missing in Alabama 13 years ago has been found this week after he used incorrect social security numbers while applying to colleges.

Julian Hernandez was reported missing from his Birmingham, Alabama home in 2002 by his mother. His father, Bobby Hernandez, apparently abducted him during a custody dispute, the Washington Post reported.

Julian then lived in Cleveland, Ohio with his father, who had changed their names.

"I think he said he was from Alabama, but that's all I know about him. I knew he said he was in the Navy. That's what he told me," Mike Melnyk, a next-door neighbour of the father and son, told Newsnet 5.

Julian, now 18, only became aware of his past when his Social Security number didn't match the name he used while applying for colleges. A school counselor who was helping Julian with his applications found out that Julian was in fact listed as missing by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and alerted the authorities, Reuters reported.

According to Reuters, Bobby Hernandez has been charged for tampering with records and remains in jail in Cleveland, but he could face additional charges in Alabama. Julian, now an adult, is free to choose whether to reunite with his mother.
