70 hostages in ISIS prisons in Iraq freed by US, Kurdish and Iraqi forces

HAWIJA, IRAQ — Dramatic footage from last Thursday's military raid on an Islamic State prison that saw 70 hostages freed and the death of the first US serviceman since 2011 has been released by Kurdish authorities.

The video — released by the Kurdistan Regional Government — shows elite Kurdish forces and US commandos going into the Hawjia, Kirkuk compound, freeing prisoners and then eventually entering an office with an ISIS flag on the wall. The footage was captured by the helmet camera of one of the Kurdish soldiers.

In another scene, the video shows prisoners being searched before being freed. Thirty troops from Delta Force participated in the rescue operation.

One American soldier, Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler, 39, was shot inside the compound and died from his injuries. He is the first soldier to die in combat in Iraq since 2011.

According to officials, 20 of the people who were rescued were members of the Iraqi forces. Others included residents and ISIS fighters accused of spying, CNN reported.

The Pentagon said the hostages were facing "imminent mass execution."
