The US and Iraq have agreed on a plan that could send approximately 615 additional US troops to Iraq in the coming days to assist Iraqi forces in the battle to retakeMosul from ISIS.
The plan was discussed for several weeks before PresidentBarack Obama and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi agreed on the details, an official told CNN.
ThePentagon has about 6,000 troops, mostly operating as advisors and trainers, inIraq.
U.S.-led coalition warplanes based outside Iraq have carried out thousands of airstrikes since mid-2014.
Most of the new U.S. troops will be deployed to Qayyarah, an Iraqi airbase known as Q-West about 40 miles south of Mosul that has become a key staging base for the planned assault.
