Video shows French sailor and cat make daring escape from boat during wild storm

COLD BAY, ALASKA — Sailing his 30-foot yacht 400 miles south of Cold Bay, Alaska, 28-year-old Emmanuel Wattecamps-Etienne found himself in the middle of a horrendous storm. 46-mph hour winds quickly gave way to treacherous 20-foot waves, leaving the lone sailor headed swiftly toward a date with possible death.

According to the Frenchman, in the middle of the night, a massive wave crashed against the small boat, knocking it over. With he and his pet cat aboard, the boat was somehow able to right itself, but now suddenly pooling with ocean water.

Panicked, he activated a location beacon, and an airplane crew was able to make radio contact with him. Upon receiving communications that the boat's rudder had been lost, the Coast Guard quickly sent out a call for any ships nearby. An oil-drilling vessel in the area picked up the distress call and sent out one of its support ships to Wattecamps-Etienne's coordinates. When it finally arrived, on the verge of making the most unlikely of escapes, the sailor stuffed his cat into his coat, and waited for just the right moment to jump to safety.

Managing to hurl himself over the rails of the rescue ship, he and his cat made it out of the nightmarish ordeal unscathed. Unfortunately, Wattecamps-Etienne says his beloved boat, La Chimere, is now gone for good, a victim of the Pacific Ocean storm. He claims it will be a while before he can afford to captain his own ship again, but thanks to his daring ways, that day remains possible - for him, and his feline first mate.
