Russia and Ukraine have reached a deal over gas supplies this winter.

The European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic, who brokered the talks, said it assured gas for Ukraine until March.

The deal will also secure supplies for Europe with about half of Russian gas, or 15% of the continent’s total consumption, imported through Ukraine in recent years.

The Russian Minister for Energy, Alexander Novak, said “we reached an agreement of mutual obligations, which will guarantee supplies for the winter months and its safe transit through Ukrainian territory to our European consumers.”

Talks between Ukraine and Russia over the issue began in March.

Kyiv’s Minister for Energy and Coal Industries, Vladimir Demchyshyn, explained that the “commercial conditions were acceptable for Ukrainians” and added that he could confirm that the conditions would be very positive for the country’s economy and especially considering the current situation in the country.”
