Exhale is an Oakland, California-based nonprofit that operates a toll-free talk line (1-866-4-EXHALE) to provide support to women after getting abortions. Aspen Baker, the cofounder of Exhale, calls the approach a “pro-voice” mentality, urging family members and loved ones who call in to listen to women with curiosity instead of fear, to embrace conflicting emotions and experiences without judgment. She hopes that by empowering women to discuss their own abortions, the conversation will begin to reflect people’s experiences rather than dry government policies that lack human voice.
