US needs to hold 'discussions' with Iran, Russia on Syria

Nelson Cunningham is a member of the US Foreign Affairs Policy Board. He has worked with leading Democrats Bill Clinton, Joe Biden and John Kerry. He is also the president of the American Security Project, a think tank founded by John Kerry. He gives us his point of view on Barack Obama's foreign policy.
Regarding the conflict in Syria, Nelson Cunningham believes the US will inevitably have to talk to Russia and Iran, among others.
"To me the answer has got to be discussions", he told FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman. "The geopolitical leaders in the region are Iran, they are Russia… The Gulf countries have important equities, and of course Israel, a clear important ally of the US, has its equities. The US has to balance all of these and we’re not going to do it with a principally military approach. It did not work in Iraq, in fact it made matters dramatically worse in Iraq, and we’re not going to repeat that again in Syria".
