Syria: child malnutrition now "serious" - UNICEF

UNICEF says the level of acute malnutrition among displaced children in the Syrian cities of Aleppo, Hama and Deir-ez-Zor is now “serious”.
The organisation will open fifteen more nutrition centres in main cities before the end of 2015, bringing the total to 75.
Salema al-Rihawi’s daugher Alma was born a few months ago. She says her daughter’s life was saved by a lucky intervention: “She has improved a lot, thanks to help from the doctors. They have taken good care of her, she is better now. The UNICEF team came to our house, when they saw Alma they said she needed to be transferred to the centre for treatment.”
Siege conditions, damaged infrastructure and a lack of resources have all taken their toll.
UNICEF staff are going from door-to-door to offer advice and support.
The organisation says more resources are needed to sustain and strengthen its humanitarian operation.
