New Discoveries In A Rare Bone-Causing Disease

A new study describes a gene mutation that is likely responsible for a rare condition called fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva in which soft tissue suddenly turns to bone.

The trigger for a highly unusual and debilitating disease may have been found, and a potential treatment could also be a possibility.
The condition is called fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, or FOP, which can cause muscles and soft tissue in the body to suddenly turn into permanent new bone.
This can be devastating for the approximately one in two million people it affects, as it can cause a stiffening in the jaw, ribcage, and elbows, making simple functions extremely difficult.
