While a steady stream of undocumented migrants continue to flood into Europe, thousands are already here, many of them trying to make a living by working illegally.

In Italy alone, an estimated 700,000 migrants work the fields, bringing in fruit and vegetable harvests for low pay, often amid appalling conditions. Our correspondents Natalia Mendoza and Bernard Bedarida report from Foggia, where tomatoes - southern Italy's "red gold"- are now being harvested.
