Talking Reformasi: The paradox of Reformasi

It is a common belief that the reformasi mood of '98 and '99 sowed the seeds for the mass protests of recent years such as the Bersih electoral reform protests and those of the environmental group Himpunan Hijau. And when the yellows and greens combined with other movements such as anti-ISA, students, and other groups with various demands, the sheer number of people on the streets of the city, was quite a sight to behold.

But the mass appeal of these protests have given birth to a counter movement, right-wing hardliners that support the political status quo.

But there is a Malaysian saying, 'cakap tak serupa bikin' which essentially means that one does not keep one's promises and Fathi highlights here some instances when those who claim to be reformists have not quite put their monies where their mouths are.
