In a bid to break the record for Asia’s longest Iftar party, volunteers of Srinagar city are preparing to host one for 3,000 people. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink and other pleasures from sunrise to sunset. Guests break their fast with bananas, dates, traditional flavoured milk, biryani and other delicacies.

At present, Sharjah in United Arab Emirates holds the record of organising the Asia's longest Iftar party on a 1.3 kilometre long stretch. While organisers claim Saturday's Iftar party set a new record, they are yet to receive an official confirmation from the relevant authorities. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and is observed as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief.
