Former FIFA vice president Jack Warner turned himself into authorities in Trinidad and Tobago yesterday evening and spent the night in jail. His lawyers are attempting to have him released on US$400,000 bail. The U.S. Justice Department has requested his extradition. Warner is accused of corruption, money laundering, and racketeering. He is charged with having asked the South African government for a US$10 million bribe in exchange for its hosting the 2010 World Cup. Since then Warner has played an important role in Trinidad and Tobago politics, financially helping the ruling party win the country's elections where he became Minister of National Security. He subsequently broke with the government and his friends and allies, forming his own party, the Independent Liberal Part. Given his questionable past and the new scandal rocking the world of soccer, is remains unclear whether Warner's legal situation is an attempt by the government to clean up the country's political system or a politically motivated maneuver.
