Hofstra student killed by police bullet in shooting

Hofstra University student, Andrea Rebello, 21, was killed by a policeman's bullet during a home robbery shooting.

The intruder, 30-year-old Dalton Smith, entered the home while Rebello's twin sister's boyfriend, John Kourtessis, stepped out to move his car. He held Rebello, her sister and their housemate hostage, as well as the boyfriend once he returned. The hostages offered Smith their cash, jewellry and computers, but he asked for more money and sent a housemate to an ATM. She called the police from her car.

When police arrived, Smith sent Jessica Rebello to the door to tell them to go away. She opened the door, let in a police officer and ran to safety. Smith then guided Kourtessis down the stairs. Kourtessis allegedly took cover behind the sofa, while Smith brought Andrea Rebello into a headlock, at gunpoint, threatening her life. When he pointed his 9mm pistol at the officer, the policeman fired eight rounds. One bullet hit Rebello in the head, and the other seven killed Smith.
