Car bomb explosion kills dozens: An IED concealed inside a parked car exploded at a market the mainly Sunni Iraqi city of Samarra on Thursday, killed at least 16 people and injured at least 24, Al Jazeera reports.

The bomb exploded around 6.45 p.m. At least three women and two children were among those killed, the BBC reports. The composition of the bomb is not known.

The comes after a wave of violence in the country, which has included a number of bombings in the capital Baghdad which killed at least 80 people. More than 3,700 people killed so far this year, indicating that Iraq could be drifting toward uncontrolled sectarian violence of the kind that left tens of thousands dead in 2006 and 2007.

"Thursday evening's attack struck the Samarra market, locally known as the Mraydi, at a time when struggling Iraqis typically frequent it in order to take advantage of reduced prices as surplus stock is sold before closing," reports Al Jazeera.

This is latest attack in a particularly bloody month for the country. Reuters reports that "more than 1,000 Iraqis were killed in attacks in July, the highest monthly toll since 2008, according to United Nations statistics.

"More than two years of civil war in neighboring Syria have aggravated deep-rooted sectarian divisions in Iraq and have unsettled the country's uneasy coalition of Shi'ite Muslim, Sunni Muslim and Kurdish factions."
