Jonathan Trappe, an IT analyst and amateur aviator, did not complete his transatlantic journey by cluster balloon as he had hoped.

Trapped took off on early Thursday (September 12) from Caribou, Maine in foggy conditions. He reported having trouble controlling his balloons by the same evening, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and landed at York Harbour in Newfoundland, far short of his goal.

According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. it used a helicopter to retrieve Trappe from the remote area a day later. Trappe had landed safely in a rugged area near York Harbour after running into trouble as he approached Newfoundland.

He was in communication with a search and rescue center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, according to Lt. Steve Henley of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Stephenville. His movements were also tracked by radar by Canadian officials.

Trappe had told CBC that his calculations indicated he wasn't going to make it to Europe, he decided to set down on land before crossing over open ocean, where a water landing would've been much more dangerous. Trappe added that he was coming in fast during landing.

"It's not the destination I set out for, but it's kind of the way with real adventure. Adventure isn't what you planned on, it's what you find, and that's what we have today," he told the CBC.

"We set out on this expedition for the adventure, and we got the adventure," he added.
