Indonesia anti terrorism police kill suspected militant

Indonesia's anti-terrorism squad killed a suspected terrorist and arrested two others on Thursday in an eastern province.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the raid took place in South Sulawesi. Three men driving a minivan were stopped by anti-terrorism squad members right outside a forest in Bone district, located about 1,400 miles northeast of the nation's capital of Jakarta.
The men resisted arrest. One of them, Suardi, 51, opened fire and police responded by fatally shooting him. The other two men, known by the names of Umail and UKM, were arrested immediately after.
The Wall Street Journal was unable to contact the arrested men for comment.
According to reports, police seized two guns, ammunition and about 2 kilograms of fertilizer, a material often used by militants to make bombs.
Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said that the men were allegedly part of a group that was considered responsible for attacks on police in Poso, in Central Sulawesi Province on Sulawesi Island, the Wall Street Journal reported.
According to reports, since January, the anti-terrorism squad has killed at least 21 suspected militants and arrested 32.
Indonesian police have been criticized for shooting suspected terrorists instead of arresting them, but according to authorities police are forced to shoot in order to defend themselves.
According to reports, terrorist groups in Indonesia are affecting fewer large scale attacks recently, in favor of smaller strikes targeting mainly police and anti-terrorism forces.
