Eight crushed to death in typhoon-hit Philippines as survivors loot rice warehouse

Eight people were killed in the Philippines when a huge crowd of typhoon survivors stormed a rice warehouse near the devastated city of Tacloban on Tuesday (November 12).
The looting took place when thousands of typhoon survivors stormed a government rice warehouse in Alangalang municipality in Leyte province, about 17 kilometers from Tacloban. Police and soldiers guarding the warehouse were overpowered by the crowd.
The National Food Authority of the Philippines said one of the walls of the warehouse collapsed. Eight people in the crowd were crushed and killed instantly.
The crowd reportedly carried off more than 100,000 bags of rice, which weighed 50 kg each. Authorities say there are other warehouses in the region but refused to disclose their locations for security reasons.
Super Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda, is one of the strongest storms ever recorded. The United Nations fears that 10,000 people may have died in the coastal city of Tacloban alone when the typhoon smashed into the Philippines' central islands on Friday.
