Fukushima radioactive waste stored in children's playgrounds by local government

Radioactive waste has been left lying around in children's playgrounds by the prefectural government at housing estates in Japan's Fukushima Prefecture in areas where children could have been easily exposed to it, according to reports in Japanese media.

At total of 950 bags of radioactive waste are believed to have been improperly stored at five housing estates in the Japanese city of Shirakawa in Fukushima Prefecture. According to national safety standards, the contaminated waste must be covered in mud in a fenced-off area to shield passersby from exposure. But the waste was left uncovered, resulting in radiation levels that were 10 times higher than the highest readings allowed under national safety standards.

After news of the poorly managed storage of radioactive waste received significant coverage in Japanese media, the Fukushima Prefectural Government took action and fenced off the storage areas with plates and nets.
