Police in Tacoma, Washington, killed an armed man at his own home on Sunday night while responding to a noise complaint.

Just after 10 p.m. Sunday night, Tacoma police arrived at the house in the 3400 block of South Proctor Street following a noise complaint. A man inside the house picked up a gun and walked outside, where one of the officers fatally shot him.

The man’s mother was home at the time and identified him to local news station KIRO 7 as “Steve”. The man’s surname has not been released.

Following the shooting, Tacoma police surrounded the residence until a SWAT team arrived to clear the house and declare the area safe.

The name of the officer who fired the fatal shot hasn’t been released, but KIRO 7 reports that he is 34 years old and has worked for the Tacoma Police Department for six years. The officer has been put on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Speaking to KIRO 7 after the shooting, the victim’s mother said she didn’t blame police for her son’s death. She said Steve had an argument with another man earlier on Sunday and mistakenly thought he had returned when the police arrived.
