Yemen prison break: 7 guards killed, 14 al-Qaeda inmates fled

Fourteen prisoners, mostly al-Qaeda members, escaped from a prison in Yemen after gunmen launched a deadly attack on the facility on Thursday (February 13).
According to the Sky News, the attack began when an explosive-laden vehicle exploded near the facility's eastern entrance, breaching a hole in the prison fence. Gunmen then attacked the guards, creating a diversion that allowed some of the prisoners to escape through the hole.
Reuters reported that eleven people were killed in the attack, seven were prison guards. Two more guards were wounded. One of the attackers was captured, according to the Daily Times.
No one claimed responsibility for the attack. Police have sealed off the road to the airport which is close to the area where the prison is located.
In October, security forces foiled an attempt by some 300 al-Qaeda inmates to escape after mutinied in another prison in Sanaa. Nasser al-Wuhayshi, chief of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula vowed in August to free imprisoned members of his network.
