Gunmen from Islamist group Boko Haram killed at least 59 students in Yobe state, northeast Nigeria in a pre-dawn attack on Tuesday (February 25).

According to the Voice of America, the attack occurred at Federal Government College Buni Yadi, a state-run co-education school at about 2 a.m.

Female students were spared in the attack, Fox News reported. The assailants went to the female dormitories and told the women to go home. They then locked the door of one male dormitory and set it ablaze. Those who tried to escape and ran away were were shot or had their throats slit.

According to CTV News, Nigerian soldiers did not arrive at the scene until hours later, giving the militants plenty of time to set the entire school campus on fire. The school's 24 buildings, including staff quarters were completely burned to the ground, Reuters reported.
