Shot by robbers: neighborhood watch enthusiast become victim after videotaping crime

Two men were arrested Thursday on murder charges in the killing of Judy Salamon after she filmed them during an alleged armed robbery in Oakland last July.
Salamon saw Mario Floyd, 21, and Stephen Lee, 22, in the process of an armed robbery and started recording the robbery with her phone. She pursued the thugs in her vehicle but allowed them to get close enough to take her phone.
Floyd threw a garbage can at Salamon's car, while Lee shot her with a handgun, according to an eyewitness. The gunshot wound would prove to be fatal and Salamon's car rolled backward into a parked car.
The two men were later identified by a witness and were no stranger to Oakland police. Floyd was convicted on a gun charge just eight days prior to Salamon's shooting. Police also knew the men were involved in local gang activity.
Salamon was an avid reader of true crime stories and was a neighborhood watch enthusiast in her middle-class neighborhood of Maxwell Park.
"She should have maybe called 911 in this situation," said Sgt. Mike Gantt of the Oakland Police Department. "'We want you to be vigilant, but we don't want you to be a vigilante."
