Brooklyn children stabbed to death in elevator: Police offer reward for info

The NYPD is offering a $12,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a man who stabbed two children, killing one, in a Brooklyn project elevator on Sunday.
Six-year-old Prince Joshua Avito and 7-year-old Mikayla Capers were playing outside the East New York project where they live when somebody beckoned them to come get some ice cream.
The children ran back inside and into the elevator, when a man in a gray hoodie barged in with them. Police say man ordered the children to "shut up" before stabbing them both. The elevator travelled from the first floor the the fourth, then back again, before it was over.
A witness saw the man trip as he fled and discovered Capers dragging herself out of the elevator. She has survived with severe injuries, including defensive wounds from fighting back against the killer, but her best friend died from his stab wounds.
Police now say the Friday murder of 18-year-old Tanaya Grant-Copeland, who was stabbed 32 times just blocks from the location of Sunday's attack, could be related as detectives found nearly identical murder weapons at both sites. The weapon used to kill Prince Joshua Avito was a Dura Edge by Imperial Knife brand kitchen knife, which costs less than $10.
No fingerprints were found on either weapon, but police are checking for DNA. Officers have also been deployed to protect children on their walk to and from school in the area, but NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton still said, "It would be advisable to be extra cautious."
