A heavily armed gunman shot dead three Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers and injured two more in Canada on Wednesday night.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Justin Bourque, was reportedly roaming around the town of Moncton. He was armed with two high-powered rifles, a crossbow and a knife, Canadian television station Global News reported.

Police received a call reporting a sighting of a man in camouflage at 7:20 p.m. A gunfight ensued between the police and Bourque. Vanessa Bernatchez, a resident of Moncton, told CBS that the police did not know the location of the shooter until he opened fire.
The gunfight resulted in the deaths of three policemen. Two others were also wounded, but the injuries were said to be non life-threatening.

The police have blocked off a number of roads in Moncton as they continue to search for him. A police helicopter has also been dispatched to help hunt for Bourque.
Bourque is still believed to be in the Pinehurst subdivision area of the city, but so far the manhunt has yielded no results.

Police from across New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island were deployed to assist in the manhunt. Such violence is rare in Canada. The last attack on Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers dates back to 2005, where four policemen were killed by a gunman on a farm in Alberta.
