Israel-Gaza conflict: another UN school hit by Israel, at least 16 dead

Israel continued its massive bombardment of Gaza on Wednesday, in attacks that caused the death toll in the three-week conflict to pass more than 1,250 Palestinians.

Al Jazeera reported that the Jabaliya refugee camp, located in northern Gaza, came under heavy airstrikes and tank shelling from Israeli forces on Wednesday, killing at least 35 according to Gaza’s health ministry.

A UN school in the camp, where Palestinians had taken shelter, was also hit by shells. At least 16 people were killed and 90 injured, according to Gaza health officials, the Guardian reported.

The New York Times reports that the death toll has now risen to 20.

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) told the BBC that Israel had been told 17 times that the school was sheltering people.

The Israeli military issued a statement saying that militants fired mortars from the vicinity of the school and that soldiers responded to the fire, while a UN source said there was no evidence of military activity inside the school, the Guardian reported.

At least 180,000 people in Gaza have taken shelter in some 80 UNRWA schools and other properties after Israel warned them it was planning to bomb their neighborhoods.

An Al Jazeera correspondent said that after the attack in Jabaliya, many families with children started leaving other UN schools.

“There seem to be no safe shelter for them, not even in UN schools,” he said.

Last week a UN school in Beit Hanoun was hit by Israel. Families were waiting in the playground to be evacuated as heavy fighting was underway in the school’s proximity.

The strike killed 16 people, the New York Times reported.
