Man’s thumb bitten in crazy street fight with Hong Kong taxi driver over zone rule

A man’s thumb bitten during a fight with a taxi driver in Hong Kong early on Wednesday morning.

In Hong Kong, taxi drivers have fixed service areas meaning passengers need to catch taxis at the right taxi stand, according to their destination. A 43-year-old man, surnamed Chang, paid a steep price for not following the rules.

After a long night, Chang decided to cab it back home, just mile from his intended pick-up point. The cab driver told him that the route must take him across the harbour, as signage make clear, and refused to serve him.

Thumbing his nose at the rules, Chang began arguing with the driver. Things got out of hand and words gave way to wrestling. Chang seized the driver’s head, and the man countered but biting down hard on Chang’s thumb.

After the fight, a bystander saw Chang and his bloody thumb and called police. The cab driver has already left by the time officers arrived.
