Uber unsafe? Taxi service criticised after Indian driver rapes passenger

Last week, Shiv Kumar Yadav, a cab driver in India was arrested on charges of assault and battery.

Yadav drove for the San Francisco-based international taxi company Uber. His arrest has sparked debate as to whether Uber’s service is safe.

The victim was a woman who worked at a finance company who called an Uber car late Friday evening. On her way home, she dozed off and when she woke up she noticed she had been driven to a secluded area. Yadav then beat her and raped her, dropping her off at home after the assault and threatening her not to call the police, saying he knew where she lived.

Nevertheless, the woman was able to maintain her cool, wrote down his license number and managed to take a photo of his car.

Uber has already faced heavy criticism of its driver screening in the US and those criticisms are resurfacing in India following this incident.
