Muhammad cartoon attack: Elton Simpson was known to FBI as terrorism suspect - TomoNews

Elton Simpson, one of the two gunmen who attacked a draw Muhammad cartoon exhibition in Texas, was a former terror suspect known to the FBI.

In 2010, Simpson had been convicted of lying to federal agents about plans to visit Somalia. Documents from that case reveal Simpson had discussed violent jihad.

According to the documents, the FBI in 2006 asked a paid informant from Kenya to befriend Elton Simpson and record their conversations.

Several of those conversations discussed travelling overseas to engage in violent jihad. In 2009, Simpson discussed with the informant his plans to travel to Somalia.

On January 7, 2010, the FBI interviewed Simpson at his home. Simpson admitted plans to attend madrassa in South Africa, but denied plans to visit Somalia.

The court convicted Simpson of lying to federal agents, but said the government could not prove he intended to travel to engage in terrorism.

Simpson’s probation ended in 2014.

Police have yet to identify the second suspect, but he is believed to have roomed with Simpsons at this apartment complex in Phoenix, Arizona.

At 635pm on Sunday, about 20 minutes before the attack, Simpson posted to Twitter using the hashtag #TexasAttack, apparently to claim responsibility for his actions. ISIS has reportedly claimed responsibility for the failed attack.
