Death on a plane: Bad service on Southwest Airlines kills man who suffers heart attack on flight

The widow of a high-profile financial analyst is blaming Southwest Airlines for her husband's tragic death.

In an interview with CBS News, Kelly Ilczyszyn explained that gross negligence on the part of Southwest staff was apparently to blame for why her husband failed to receive adequate medical attention following a heart attack he suffered while aboard one of their planes.

The widow of Richard Ilczyszyn, the founder of independent brokerage firm iiTrader, is now filing a wrongful death suit against the carrier.

The widow explained the unfortunate series of events that led to her husband's untimely death to CBS.

As Richard Ilczyszyn's Southwest flight was getting ready for landing last September, flight attendants could hear strange noises coming from the lavatory.

They got to the rear toilet only to find a slumped-over Ilczyszyn screaming and groaning in pain.

Rather than attempt to aid the 46-year-old, who had wedged his foot against the door, preventing entry, the crew instead declared him 'unruly' and contacted authorities.

Police first evacuated the rest of the flight's passengers and only after discovering an unresponsive Ilczyszyn, got him the medical attention he so badly needed.

"He should have been helped on the aircraft," Kelly Ilczyszyn told CBS. "If they just would have gotten help.

Southwest, for their part, don't accept blame for the tragic death. A spokesman cited by the Daily Mail said staff are trained to treat the kind of behavior Ilczyszyn displayed as a security risk.
