16-year-old girl’s attackers sentenced to yard work in Kenya

Unfortunately, sexual assaults in Kenya are quite common, but one recent case has drawn international attention.
A 16-year-old girl only known as “Liz” was assaulted by 6 men on her way home from her grandfather’s funeral. Not only did they beat her, they also sexually assaulted her until she passed out, then dumped her in a ditch.
Thankfully she was discovered and taken to hospital where she was treated for her injuries. She later reported the sexual assault to police and identifed 3 of the men who attacked her.
The police brought in the 3 men and “punished” them by making them trim the lawn around the police station before being released. The insultingly light punishment sparked public outrage and protests all over Africa. Over a million people have come out to protest the authorities failed handling of Liz’s case. In Kenya, committing rape can incur a 10 year jail sentence, yet rape cases in Kenya often go uninvestigated and unpunished by the authorities.
No one asks to be raped and when the system fails a victim they are violated all over again.
