Berkeley police shooting: man shot and killed by police officer not far from Ferguson

A St. Louis County police officer fatally shot a man who pointed a gun at him in Berkeley, Missouri, just two miles from the city of Ferguson, where the August police shooting of Michael Brown sparked protests across the country.

The Berkeley incident happened on Tuesday night. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Antonio Martin.

Martin was at a Mobil gas station in Berkeley with another man and two women, one of whom was his girlfriend. A police officer arrived at the station after receiving a call about a theft. It was around 11:15 p.m., St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

One of the two men approached the police car’s driver side, while the two women walked away. The officer got out of the car holding a flashlight. According to reports, the officer had been given a body camera but did not have it on him at the time of the shooting.

Martin is shown in the gas station surveillance video backing off a little before walking towards the officer and pointing a gun at him.

The officer reportedly fired one shot, then stumbled back, then fired two more shots.

One shot hit the 18-year-old man while another one struck a tire of the police car.

It is still unknown where the third round went.

The man who was with Martin ran away, and Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.

His 9 mm gun had one round in the chamber and five rounds in the magazine when it was found at the scene. His serial number was reportedly defaced.

According to ABC News, the suspect’s mother, Toni Martin, told reporters that Martin was at the scene of the shooting with his girlfriend but that he did not carry a gun.

The St. Louis County police department is now conducting an investigation into the shooting.

The shooting has sparked a crowd of 200 protesters against the police near the gas station, NBC News reported.
