Nuclear construction site gas leak: South Korea accident leaves 3 workers dead

Three workers died Friday apparently after inhaling toxic gas at a nuclear plant construction site, the state power operator said Friday.

Bae Kyong-min, an official at the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP), said nitrogen gas leaked from an underground cable is believed to have killed the three workers at the reactor construction site in Uslan, about 410 kms southeast of Seoul.

The accident occurred around 5:18 p.m.. Nitrogen gas was believed to have leaked underground at an auxiliary building of the reactor, but the exact cause is still under investigation.

The workers were on a safety inspection when they were exposed to the gas. They were taken to the hospital but were confirmed dead.

The New Gori No. 3 reactor was 99 percent complete and scheduled for full operation next June, according to KHNP.

The gas leak comes days after KHNP was hit with a series of cyberattacks by hackers who claim they can disable the control systems of its plants.

KHNP spokeswoman Choi Hee-ya said there was no reason to believe that the accident was linked to the cyberattack threats.
