Boko Haram latest video: Boko Haram attacks villages and kidnaps 80 people in Cameroon
  • 9 years ago
Boko Haram fighters from Nigeria crossed the border into northern Cameroon on Sunday and took away 80 people, most of them children, according to reports.

Insurgents from Nigeria arrived at the villages of Mabass and Makxy in northern Cameroon in the early hours of Sunday, according to CNN.

During the raid, the militants kidnapped as many as 80 villagers, most of them children aged under 15. Several villagers attempted to defend the village but were killed by the insurgents.

A Cameroonian government spokesman confirmed the attack and said the Boko Haram fighters also torched at least 80 homes.

Apart from Cameroon, the Islamic extremist group, which received global attention for kidnapping about 200 schoolgirls from northeastern Nigeria, has also attacked Niger.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Chad has deployed troops to Cameroon to try and stem Boko Haram’s attacks.

The landlocked country depends on Cameroon for imports through the port of Douala. It also transports crude oil through a pipeline that connects to a floating facility off southern Cameroon.

Hundreds of people joined an anti-Boko Haram rally in the Chad capital Saturday, showing support for the government’s decision to send troops to Cameroon.
