Ukraine conflict: Vladimir Putin announces ceasefire in eastern Ukraine

The leaders of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France announced a ceasefire-deal after 17 hours of talks in Minsk, Belarus, aimed at ending a 10-month conflict that has claimed more than 5,300 lives.
The new ceasefire between Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels is scheduled to take effect on midnight, February 15. According to the deal, heavy weapons must be withdrawn from the frontline starting on Sunday within 14 days, according to the Kremlin’s website.
The security zone separating the two sides must be 50 km wide for artillery over 100 mm caliber, 70 km for multiple rocket launchers, and 100 km for longer-range weapons. All prisoners are to be released within 19 days, and Ukraine will regain control of the international border.
The BBC reported that pro-Russian rebels have signed the agreement.
A previous truce between Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels also agreed upon in Minsk collapsed within days of its signing in September when both sides attempted to gain ground.
