Australian customs officers seized a sizable shipment of ivory bound for Malaysia during an air cargo inspection in Perth last weekend.

The ivory shipment seized by Australian authorities on Sunday weighed 110 kilogrammes and is valued at US$385,000 dollars.

Originating in Malawi, the cargo was en route to Malaysia via Perth, Western Australia.

Australian customs officials discovered the illegal shipment during an inspection of air cargo.

Offenders face a maximum imprisonment of 10 years or a AU$170,000 fine for individuals if convicted.

It is estimated that about 20,000 elephants worldwide are poached annually for their tusks.
