The man who was the architect of Estonia's independence from the Soviet Union has told al Jazeera he strongly criticises NATO for provoking Russia through its military expansion in eastern Europe.

Rein Mullerson made his remarks after several western leaders warned that Moscow might launch an attack on one of the Baltic states to test NATO's resolve.
