A former dentist has been charged with "criminally negligent homicide and tampering with evidence" following the death of one of his patients last year.

This past Tuesday, Dr. Rashmi Patel turned himself into police but the ordeal has been going on for quite some time. In February of 2014, the patient, 64-year-old Judith Gan, arrived at Patel's dental office in Enfield, Connecticut.

Patel allegedly sedated her and extracted 20 infected teeth during the single procedure. A dental assistant noticed the woman was in distress and pleaded with the dentist to stop, before calling 911 for help.

She was taken to a hospital in Massachusetts and was soon pronounced dead. The medical examiner’s office recently determined she passed away from therapeutic complications and that's what police needed to place Patel in custody.
