Egypt closes Rafah border crossing into Gaza

Late Thursday Egyptian authorities closed the Rafah border crossing, the only real route connecting the Gaza Strip to the outside world. The move followed a three day temporary opening in which 830 Palestinians entered and left Gaza. The number of Palestinians on the waiting list for the border crossing, however, tops 25,000. Cairo also released 45 Palestinians from prison who had illegally entered the country through tunnels with the aim of reaching Europe via the Egyptian port of Alexandria.
