00:00 The Rafah crossing point between Egypt and Gaza has finally opened to allow 20 Egyptian
00:05 trucks carrying medical supplies across after a week of intense negotiations involving the
00:10 US, Israel, Egypt and UN.
00:13 Under the agreement, only 20 trucks will be allowed today, all deliveries from the Egyptian
00:18 Red Crescent to the Palestinian Red Crescent organization.
00:22 A UN official said that the next convoy might not be allowed to cross until Monday.
00:27 The Israeli government has demanded to see proof that the aid deliveries are not seized
00:31 or diverted by Hamas before authorizing further deliveries.
00:35 More than 200 trucks carrying roughly 3,000 tons of aid had been positioned near the crossing
00:40 for days before heading into Gaza.
00:42 For two weeks, Israel has blockaded the territory and launched waves of punishing air attacks,
00:47 following an October 7 rampage by Hamas fighters on towns in southern Israel.
00:52 Martin Griffiths, the UN's Emergency Relief Coordinator, welcomed the delivery, saying
00:56 it followed "days of deep and intense negotiations with all relevant sides to make sure that
01:02 aid operation into Gaza resumes as quickly as possible and with the right conditions.
01:07 I am confident that this delivery will be the start of a sustainable effort to provide
01:12 essential supplies, including food, water, medicine and fuel, to the people of Gaza in
01:16 a safe, dependable, unconditional and unimpeded manner," he said.
01:22 Many in Gaza reduced to eating one meal a day and without enough water to drink are
01:26 waiting desperately for aid.
01:28 Hospital workers were also in urgent need of medical supplies and fuel for their generators
01:32 as they treated thousands of people wounded in the bombings.
01:35 The Israeli military has said that aid entering Gaza will only go to southern areas and that
01:40 there is no fuel going in.
01:42 World Health Organization medical supplies have crossed the Rafah border, said the body's
01:47 Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, but said much more is needed.
01:53 Israel has been pounding the Gaza Strip with airstrikes after it vowed to wipe out Hamas.
01:57 The UN said more than 140,000 homes, nearly a third of all homes in Gaza, have been damaged,
02:02 with nearly 13,000 completely destroyed.
02:05 Meanwhile, protests are being held across the world in support of Palestinians as Israel
02:09 continues its siege on the Gaza Strip.
