Mourners bid farewell to Lebanon's ex-PM Karami

STORY: Thousands of residents of Lebanon's northern coastal city of Tripoli attended the funeral of former prime minister Omar Karami on Friday (January 2).

Karami died aged 80 after an illness, state news agency NNA reported on Thursday (January 1), citing a statement from his family.

The funeral was attended by senior Lebanese political figures, including former President Michel Suleiman while Tripoli's mayor Nader Ghazal told Reuters Television that the country had lost an "important figure."

Karami, who served twice as prime minister, passed away in a hospital in Beirut, it said, without giving details.

He served as prime minister from 1990-1992 and was forced to resign after protests over the economy. He held the post again in 2004 but stepped down the following year along with the government after the assassination of former prime minister Rafic Hariri triggered mass protests.

Karami hails from a prominent pol
