A woman in Lake Mary, Florida was recently injured by a bear. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening while 68-year-old Jeanne Barber was out walking her dog.

Staffers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said her dog yanked on the leash while trying to chase the bear and that caused Barber to fall to the ground.

The bear then approached Barber and bit her on the upper arm before taking off. Barber’s relatives transported her to Central Florida Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Her dog wasn’t hurt. State wildlife officials were sent to the neighborhood to investigate and speak to residents.

A trap has been installed to catch the creature responsible but it has not been made public if the bear will be euthanized once it’s captured. Bear sightings are common in the Lake Mary neighborhood, due to the many oak trees which produce acorns for the animals to eat.

Also, a number of homes in the subdivision, which is near a lake and wooded area, are vacant and construction work in the area is ongoing, meaning there’s dumpsters around filled with trash and food for bears to get into.

The attack on Barber was the third known incident that has occurred this year in Seminole County. Residents are being urged to continuously monitor their children and pets. They have also been given a number to report threatening or unusual bear behavior.
