You may remember the so-called IKEA monkey that became an international star after he was discovered wearing a shearling coat in the parking lot of a Canadian IKEA store in late 2012.

Now, the curious and famous creature is growing and he needs a bigger home. After the monkey, named Darwin, was found in IKEA a judge decided that he shouldn’t be placed back into the care of his owner.

Since that ruling, Darwin has stayed at the Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary in Sunderland, Ontario. The facility is hoping to relocate to a larger property to not only accommodate Darwin, but also the other twenty-one primates that currently call the rescue facility home.

Staffers aim to raise nearly 500 thousand dollars so they and the monkeys can move by the spring of next year. They are using crowdfunding to make that dream happen and Darwin is the star feature in the campaign to raise funds.

On the Indiegogo page, sanctuary employees note “A new larger property will allow Story Book to provide more monkeys a safe home as well as improve the environment of our current residents.”

They point out that a bigger facility will allow for the expansion of education and advocacy programs along with the launch of a primate internship program and the opportunity to hire a permanent staff.
