Manhole covers are common sights on most urban streets. Recently one of those covers in New York City exploded and two people were left injured as a result.

According to a witness at the scene, the manhole cover shot up and struck a taxi. It reportedly hit the hood of the vehicle before crashing through the windshield.

Both the cabbie and passenger inside the taxi were hurt. Starbucks barista and Good Samaritan Bernard Vickers saw the terrifying ordeal.

He immediately sprang into action. Vickers remarked “I ran outside to check on the cab’s passenger and driver. The driver’s window was down, so I helped him get out the window.”

Once that was done, Vickers guided the passenger to safety. Both victims were transported to a local hospital where their injuries were said to be minor.

The cab was left with a large hole in the front windshield and dent on the hood. The manhole cover was a square grate that had been in the middle of the road prior to the explosion.

According to Con Edison staffers, a faulty underground electrical cable may have played a role in the blast.
