Iranian rallies mark Ashura but also 1979 takeover of US embassy

The Muslim festival of Ashura has also been marked in Iran, but people have also marked the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran.

The British, American and Israeli flags have been burnt in front of the site.

One protester said: “The Prophet’s grandson was martyred for justice, for the religion of God and for fighting oppression and tyrants. Today we consider America, Israel and their western agents as tyrants.”

One cleric also made mention of talks expected next week between Iranian and American officials over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

“Our nuclear negotiators must be paid an extra salary because they are negotiating with the monsters of the world,” said Alireza Panahian. “And if they don’t come to their senses, we will crush them ourselves and with the help of our soldiers in the region.”

The anti-Western rallies put more pressure on moderate President Hassan Rouhani on the nuclear issue, with a deadline of November 24 to find a solution.
